Difference between Humic Acid and Amino Acids

Both humic acid and amino acids are organic substances that play an important role in agriculture, soil improvement, plant nutrition and other fields, but they have significant differences in their sources, functional characteristics and application methods.

 

Source and chemical structure

Humic acid:

Source: Mainly formed by plant residues, animal excrement and microorganisms in the soil after long-term biochemical degradation and transformation, and exists in natural environments such as soil, peat, lignite, and water sediments.

Amino acids:

Source: The basic unit that constitutes protein. There are 20 kinds amino acids used in agricultural production are mainly derived from the hydrolyzate of protein, such as animal hair, feathers, blood meal, fish meal, soybean meal, yeast and other organic hydrolyzates, or amino acid solutions produced by bioengineering technology.

 

Function and application

 

Humic acid:

1. Soil improvement:

Improve soil structure, enhance soil aggregate stability, and improve soil water and fertilizer retention capacity.

2. Nutrient management:

Form complexes with metal ions to improve the effectiveness of trace elements; form complexes with fertilizers to reduce phosphorus fixation and improve the effectiveness of phosphorus.

3. Plant nutrition:

directly or indirectly affects plant growth, regulates plant hormone levels, increases antioxidant enzyme activity, and enhances stress resistance; promotes seed germination, root development, and photosynthesis.

4. Environmental remediation:

adsorbs and chelates heavy metals, and is used for heavy metal pollution remediation in soil and water; inhibits harmful microbial activity.

Amino acids:

1. Plant nutrition:

directly absorbed and utilized by plants, and participates in physiological processes such as protein synthesis, enzyme activity regulation, photosynthesis, and stress resistance enhancement.

2. Improve fertilizer utilization:

as a carrier or synergist, improve nutrient solubility, mobility, and plant absorption efficiency, and reduce fertilizer losses.

3. Improve soil microbial activity:

provide nutrition for soil microorganisms, promote the reproduction of beneficial microorganisms, and enhance soil biological activity.

4. Enhance plant resistance:

certain amino acids play an important role in plants’ response to adversity, and improve plant stress resistance by regulating metabolism, protecting cell membranes, and removing free radicals.

 

Product forms and application methods

Humic acid:

often extracted and made into humic acid fertilizers, humic acid soil conditioners, humic acid water-soluble fertilizers, humic acid foliar fertilizers, and other products, which are used in agricultural production.

Amino acids:

Usually appear in the form of amino acid fertilizers, amino acid foliar fertilizers, amino acid biostimulants, etc., and are sometimes combined with other nutrients to form amino acid compound fertilizers.
